Really enjoyed your discussions on internet security. I recently interviewed Ben Halpert on the topic. Ben is a security expert and is launching a non-profit focused on teaching parents to educate their kids from the pre-school ages. You can view the video on DAD-O-Matic
Interesting chat. Would like to hear you directly address a question that has been quite the hot topic in our household lately: "Should parents be friends with their teenagers on FaceBook?".
Totally agree that it's the parent's responsibility and not that of Facebook to patrol usage. All parents need to have accounts on the social media sites that their kids frequent. You're not going to hand your kid the car keys if you don't know how to drive yourself, are you?
I hit on similar topics on Facebook Dad .
@David,
That is a great discussion point. In fact, it doesn't seem to stop with kids. My mom recently said that she joined Facebook. We both agreed that it would be a bit odd to have us friend each other. We have our relationship in other areas so we don't feel the need to extend it to the public/social networking space.
Obviously, friending your kids on FB brings up an interesting topic that we have discussed in a few of our episodes, should you be "friends" with your kids. This is a very personal topic. I'm of the opinion that you should be parents first and generate the nurturing respect that you get with that relationship. The parent-child relationship is sacred. Friend-friend relationships are different. If you "friend" your child on Facebook, you blur those lines (but it might be good for monitoring what they are doing - again this depends on their age).
@Facebook Dad,
Thanks for the comment and I like your analogy of the car keys. This whole concept is going to get even more difficult as social networks become yet more prevalent. Buckle your seatbelts!
Thanks for listening!
